Spicer

Our Lady of Loretto High School.

Spicer

Dear Wildcat Parents and Guardians:

I hope your families have had a good start to the school year. It’s been great to have your daughters return to school, and it has been wonderful to see you all again. Sending your daughter to Bishop Conaty-Loretto in these challenging times is no easy task. We recognize and value your sacrifices. Know that we are committed to providing your families with affordable, quality, comprehensive, college preparatory Catholic education for your daughters. We have taken steps to keep costs down and to raise additional funds for tuition assistance and operational needs. We continue to solicit donations from foundations and we have established an Annual Fund (see the Development section of this newsletter).

This year we have also been fortunate enough to receive 90% federal government e-Rate funding for technology enhancements. We have established online digital lockers where students can save work from home and open it at school. We are also upgrading our firewall to protect your daughters at school from harmful websites. We will be installing an IPTV system where we can store digital videos and podcasts of school activities which you will be able to access both live and taped at home from our web-site. Finally, we are looking into a new school management system for next year; one of our plans for the new systems is to allow parents and students to access their grades online.

Please use this newsletter as a means of communication to keep yourselves informed of school happenings. I also hope you have been checking our school website http://www.bishopconatyloretto.org for news, information, and teachers web pages and links to teacher blogs. If you haven’t had a chance to visit my blog, please check it out at http://bclprinicpal.blogspot.com.

Thank you for all that you do in support of your daughter’s education. You are integral to your daughter’s achievement and success at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. Let’s continue to work together to make your daughter’s days at Conaty-Loretto most rewarding for her!

May God bless you throughout this and every year.

A Message from the Vice-Principal—
Lisa J. Gabriel

Now that fall is here and the cooler weather is arriving (we hope!) it is important that parents and students understand the dress code regulations for cold weather. Students may wear an undershirt in addition to their polo, however it must be white. No colored undershirts are allowed. Also, students must wear only their school sweater, a school sweatshirt, or the burgundy fleece-lined jacket that is available from Dennis Uniforms. Any other jacket will be confiscated. Confiscated non-uniform items will not be returned to the student and are donated to charity. I ask your assistance in monitoring your daughter’s uniform and making sure that it meets the regulations listed in the Student/Parent Handbook. If you have any questions regarding these regulations, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Attendance procedures are listed in the Student/Parent Handbook. Please read them carefully. Particularly important are the policies regarding excused and unexcused absences. Absences are excused only for illness and a death in the family. Absences for other reasons are unexcused. A teacher may opt not to allow a student to make up assignments missed due to unexcused absences. Due to our block schedule, if a student misses a class, she misses the equivalent of two days of instruction and can fall behind easily. Please do whatever you can to avoid unnecessary absences.

As always, if I can be of any help to you or your daughter, please do not hesitate to call me.

A Message from the President of the Parent Association—
Gwen Jenkins

First, we would like to welcome our new parents to our community at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School! We have a busy and exciting year planned! With work and everyday life, we understand that it can be difficult to get involved in your daughter’s school, so we have set in advance dates for future memorable events. The Father-Daughter Picnic will take place Saturday, October 18 from 12:00-3:00 PM and the Mother-Daughter Tea Saturday, May 2. We are also planning a Family Fun Night and School Beautification Day for the spring. Becoming involved in these activities is great fun and allows you to earn parent service hours. Attendance at Parent Association and Parent Board meetings also earns parent service hours.

Parents volunteers are needed to help with recruitment. This year, we are planning to have parents and their daughters answer questions and distribute information about Bishop Conaty-Loretto after Sunday Mass in their parishes to increase our recruitment efforts. What better way to give witness and support your daughters’ school! Parent service hours will be given. Please contact Ms. Lisa Gabriel at school (323-737-0012 ext. 104) if interested.

Remember, 15 Parent Service Hours to the school must be fulfilled during the 2008-2009 school year. For each service hour not earned during the year, a fee of $20 will be assessed at the end of the school year. Be attentive to service hour opportunities that are periodically announced throughout the school year.

Finally, we welcome new parent board members, especially parents that can translate in Spanish and Korean and parents with daughters in the 9th and 10th grade to join the parent board.

Thank You and God Bless.

Campus Ministry

Service-Learning Experience Guidelines: Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School is mindful of its call to continue the mission of Jesus Christ and to challenge each student to develop her unique gifts and to offer these in service toward building a more just and peaceful society. We seek to empower young women to be tomorrow’s leaders with a commitment to elevating the human spirit, to extending themselves habitually to those in need, and to nurturing a servant’s heart through prayer and reflection on the Gospel. We appreciate that the classroom is not the only place for education and that education must include the opportunity for each student to develop a sense of responsibility for the needs and problems of the larger community. Indeed, Christians must encounter and serve others less fortunate than they, if their spirituality is to be "of the heart" and not merely "of the intellect."

Therefore as a requirement for graduation, each student is to complete a minimum of 25 hours of volunteer service per year for each of her four years at Bishop Conaty-Loretto. At each grade-level there are different guidelines for fulfilling this service obligation.
· Freshman Guidelines for Service: As life begins in the family and therefore the first responsibility is to family, a freshman may do her 25 Service-Learning hours within the family. This experience is not to include any of the regular family chores for which the student is already responsible. The student is to be involved in working with adult members of her family or extended family. She could assist in that special project the family has been putting off at home or work-place (such as: painting, landscaping, minor construction, garage clean-out, re-organizing the office or kitchen). The student could assist an aging or sick relative or a relative with small children with some household chores or by visiting and entertaining them on a regular basis. The student may not receive any payment for her service.
· Sophomore Guidelines for Service: As faith is integral to the learning experience of our students a sophomore is asked to become an active participant in her place of worship. A student who is enrolled in Confirmation Classes or Youth Groups in her church is given service hours for her participation. Volunteering at religiously affiliated charities, assisting at religious schools, singing in church choirs, etc. is also acceptable service. If you do not have a place of worship, please come to the Campus Ministry Office.
· Junior and Seniors Guidelines for Service: Each junior and senior is asked to take a risk by involving herself in an unfamiliar, and perhaps uncomfortable, experience of service to others whose lifestyles are different from her own. The student’s service is to help her understand her Christian responsibility in confronting injustices and inequalities found in her society and to help her gain empathy for the sufferings of those who are less fortunate. Beginning in her junior year a student seeks out service opportunities that focus on the essential elements of Catholic Social Teaching (dignity of human life, call to live community, protection of rights, option for the poor, rights of workers, solidarity in the human family, and care for God’s Creation) were she may minister. At least one-half (25) of the 50 hours due for the final two years of her service requirement are to be specifically given in service to the disadvantaged (the poor, homeless, sick, orphaned, those in prisons).

Donations Needed for Freshmen Retreat: The freshmen overnight retreat begins on Friday, October 24th and ends on Saturday. October 25th. We need many donations to help make this retreat a great success. In order to assure that there are enough donations in each category check in the Campus Ministry Office for items that are still needed and complete the Donation Form. Donations made without completion of the form may not be accepted. For 1 service hour you may donate the following: 24 cans of soda, 24 bottles of water, 1 large pizza (already cooked) bring on Friday by 6:45 PM, 16 cups of green salad and salad dressing, on Friday by 6:45 PM., 750 firm paper plates, 750 plastic cups, and 750 paper cups for hot drinks, 750 firm forks, 750 spoons, 750 firm bowls, or 1000 napkins, enough cookies or cake to feed 50, 24 small yogurts, 24 individual size cereals, 2 gallons of milk, 2 gallons of orange juice (not orange drink) 3 dozen breakfast pastries (pan dulce, cinnamon buns, or donuts) or $10.00 per hour. For 4 service hours you may: Prepare 3 dozen Breakfast Burritos or English Muffins Breakfast Sandwiches and bring ready to serve at7:30 AM on Saturday, October 25.

Looking for Alumnae: The Campus Ministry Retreat Team would like to invite alumnae of our school (in all its many phases from “Los Angeles, Catholic Girls’ High School”, Bishop Conaty Memorial & Our Lady of Loretto to the merging) to come and share their stories of being students with the freshmen on their retreat. We would especially love families with multiple generations of graduates to come and share.
The retreat is the weekend of October 24th and 25th. The students stay overnight on the school campus. We invite you to join us for our pizza dinner at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria and stay to share stories from about 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. You are also invited to come back on Saturday and celebrate liturgy with the freshmen and their parents.

Freshmen Families: The “Class of 2012” Retreat is a great way to begin the high school years. This is an overnight retreat held on school campus on the Friday, October 24th and Saturday, October 25th. The retreat begins on Friday evening at 5:00 PM and concludes with a liturgy for both parents, families, and students at 10:00 AM on Saturday. This retreat is an opportunity for the students to strengthen their relationship with God, grow in the unity, heritage and spirit of our school and connect with each other. Each young lady needs to bring a sleeping bag, sleep-wear, comfortable clothes, any personal items that you need to stay overnight, and a snack to share. Do not bring any electronic items including cell phones. On the evening of October 24th plan report to the gym no later than 5:00 PM. All students are required to make a retreat each year. See Sister Andrea by October 21st, to arrange for an alternative to this retreat if for some reason you are unable to attend.

Business Office

Fall Raffle Tickets are due October 21. All students received raffle tickets in their packet on the first day of school. This is the first of our two mandatory fundraisers. The raffle tickets are due on October 21 however you may turn the tickets and money in to the business office anytime. Please remember to separate the raffle tickets before you turn them in so that they are ready for the raffle drawing. You know how we challenge young women to be leaders who make a difference. Currently we are working on the establishment of an Annual Fund to continue an 85 year tradition of excellence in education. Our goal is to foster community and to insure the economic health of the school as it continues into its 9th decade of serving the young women of central Los Angeles.

Of course, educating young women to be faith-filled leaders, well-rounded, responsible citizens, effective communicators, and life-long learners does not come without cost. It is through the generosity of alumnae, parents, faculty, friends and foundations and their support of Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto’s Annual Fund, that we are able to enrich the lives of students both in and out of the classroom. Your support of the Annual Fund insures that our school both survives and thrives.

The Annual Fund is not about keeping the lights on and heating the building; it is about keeping the passion alive for day-to-day study, for athletics, and for people, service and leadership. The Annual Fund provides those additional dollars that take a fine Catholic, college preparatory education and make it exceptional by providing for the resources and experiences that truly do make a difference.

Every gift to Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto’s Annual Fund matters—will you take the initiative to make a contribution? Pledge forms and remittance envelopes are available from Judy Krommer, Development Director (323) 737-0012 ext 106. Judy is always welcome to take your calls. Contribution can be made by credit card; see the website for information.

As an important stakeholder in Bishop Conaty-Loretto’s future, we trust that you will respond to this appeal.

Thank you for your commitment to our Mission to provide a quality, affordable, comprehensive, college preparatory Catholic education to young women in central Los Angeles, to our Vision to educate the whole person for success in the 21st Century, and for your continuing dedication to Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School.

Guidance Department

Testing: On Wednesday, October 15, the entire school will be involved in college preparation experiences. Freshmen will take the Explore exam, sophomores will take the Plan exam, and juniors will take the PSAT exam. These are exams that: give the students an opportunity to experience what they will encounter when they take exams to apply for college, and also indicate the skills they have mastered and those which need improvement. The scores do not go on any permanent record, but are used for guidance when the students meet with their guidance counselors. We will have a shortened school day, ending at approximately 12:00 pm.

Seniors: The senior class will also be at school on October 15. They will have a variety of activities to choose from that pertain to applying to college. We will have application workshops to fill out applications for the Cal State University system, (and a guest speaker), the University of California system, financial aid forms and essay writing guidance. This activity is not optional, and your daughter is expected to be at school on-time and report to homeroom as usual.

If you have a daughter who is a senior, please remind her that the first few months of school are those in which she should be exploring her college options by attending presentations by guest speakers from a variety of colleges both in the state and across the nation. She should also take advantage of after school group presentations by Mrs. Marcy and make an appointment, if she has not already done so, to meet individually with Mrs. Marcy to map out a plan for furthering her education after high school.

The guidance office is happy to answer any questions you may have about this day. Please call:
· Sr. Lupe, counselor for freshmen and sophomores.
· Mrs. Marcy, counselor for juniors and seniors.

Academics

Parental support of their daughters’ education at home is a key factor in student success. Students have homework every night. It is important that parents verify that their daughters are completing assignments on time and studying regularly. In this manner, we all can work as partners in your daughters’ education. .Last spring, Bishop Conaty-Loretto instituted the following Make-up/Late Work/Extra Credit Policy to help students to take responsibility for their own learning and to encourage them to make up missed work quickly, while the information is still fresh:

A teacher should require that a student make up a test under teacher supervision before or after school, not during class time. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with her teacher to make up a test or work missed because of absence. Teachers are required to permit students with absences (whether excused or unexcused) to make up tests and assignments missed during the absence based upon the rules and guidelines established at the beginning of the year. In the case of a student truancy and/or class cut, the student will earn a zero for any assignment/test missed on the day of occurrence. Guidelines:
· Make-Up Work: A student has 2 days to make up missed class work/homework assignments and quizzes/test for every day she is absent.
· Late Work: Late class work/homework assignments will be accepted for no more than ½ credit up to 2 days after the due date. After 2 days no credit will be earned for the late assignments.
· Extra Credit: Extra may be assigned only when all assignments have been completed. Extra credit is not “instead-of” credit. Extra credit is at the discretion of the teacher.

Deficiency Reports were given to students during the week of October 6. These notices are given to the students approximately 3 weeks before the end of each quarter of academic work. ONLY those students who are having academic difficulty in a subject receive this notification. No deficiency report is given if your daughter is performing well in her classes, but on occasion a progress report may be given. If you have reason to believe that your daughter should be receiving a deficiency report and she has not shown you this report, then call the school office and inquire about the status of these deficiency reports. Sometimes these reports may not find their way into your hands for a variety of reasons, so your follow-up is essential. A parent is required to sign these reports and your daughter needs to return the form to the subject teacher. Please be attentive to these reports and take the necessary action as requested by the teacher. Your intervention now may make the difference between a passing and failing grade for your daughter.

Report Cards will be given to the students on November 7. Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled during the week of November 11-14. If a conference is desired, parents are asked to contact teachers directly to set up an appointment during that week at a mutually convenient time. Parents, if a teacher would like to meet with you to discuss your daughter’s progress, the following comment will be listed on the report card next to the student grade: “Parent, meet with teacher.” If you see this comment, please follow through and contact the teacher. Early intervention will make all the difference in success or failure. All parents are welcome to take advantage of this time set aside for parent-teacher conferences. However, if this time is not convenient for you, an alternate time can be arranged.

Our annual fall Parent Classroom Observation Day is planned for December 3. This is a day when parents are invited to attend classes with their daughters. You may choose to come for part of the day or for the entire day. It's a great way to experience what your daughter is doing on a daily basis and to learn first hand what's happening in the classroom.

Student Activities

In order for your daughter to remain in school for an after school activity, a permission form must be signed by a parent acknowledging the student's participation as well as indicating the manner in which she will be leaving the school campus after termination of the activity. Students must leave campus immediately after dismissal from school or at the end of an after school activity. Students will not be permitted to maintain membership in a club/activity or to participate in after hours tutoring, unless a timely departure from school occurs.

Spirit Day will take place October 31. This is a time of friendly competition among teams comprised of different grade levels. Various activities are planned. Ask your daughter about the particulars of this very spirited occasion. It’s an opportunity for our students to show their unity and pride in their school.

Athletics

The Volleyball Season has officially begun. Marcos Arias is the varsity coach and Iris Romero is the junior varsity coach. Home Games (4:30 Junior Varsity start/6:00 Varsity start): October 16 against San Gabriel Mission, October 21 against Vistamar, October 23 against Sacred Heart, and October 30 against Alverno (and November 4 against Holy Family).

Cross County has also begun. This is our second year fielding a team. Home Meet: October 22 in Griffith Park. Heather Boyle and the girls would love to see us at one of their meets.

Many thanks to Jan Chambers, our Athletic Director, for all she does to coordinate the sports program. Good Luck! Wildcats!

Fine and Performing Arts

Our fine and performing arts program is expanding. We are very happy to offer Introduction to Music and Ceramics in addition to Drawing and Painting, Visual Arts, Dance, and Drama this year. Continue to check the school web-site for announcements about plays, concerts and exhibitions.

Comedy Sportz will host a competition Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15 at 7:00 PM, admission $5.00. The event was open to students form all grade levels and their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters. About ninety people attended. The Parents' Board was very happy with the turn out. Tea, savory sandwiches, sweets and fruit were served. Hae Yeon Kang, Yei Seul Hwang, Mi Rim Kim, and Grace Lim provided musical entertainment. Rosalind Smith sang Amazing Grace. Juliette Fuller (Bishop Conaty '65) reflected on life at Conaty in the 1960's. Seniors and their mothers were honored. Great fun was had by all.

Richard A. Spicer

Dear Wildcat Parents and Guardians:

The end of the school year if quickly approaching. It has been a great pleasure working with you and your daughters this year. This newsletter will be the last formal newsletter for this year. The next newsletter will be sent home to all our returning families in mid-August along with all the orientation materials for the start of the 2008-2009 school year which will begin on Wednesday, August 27 for incoming freshmen and transfer students only and on Thursday, August 28 for all students. This August mailing is only sent to registered students, so it's important that your daughter is fully registered at this time. If you are traveling over the summer, please make sure that you arrange your vacation in such a way that your daughter will be present for the opening day of school.

Many heartfelt thanks go out to our wonderful parents who on March 8, School Beautification Day, along with their daughters, gave up a Saturday morning to build benches in the courtyard for the students. It was a beautiful morning and great fun was had by all. We were able to re-assemble twenty benches using the old Conaty conrete bench-supports that had not seen the light of day since well before the reconstruction of the school in the early 1990s. Several fathers took charge sharing their expertise and talents as the rest of the parents and students pitched in to get the job done. Ms Boyle came by to lend a hand. The beautification project fostered a great sense of pride and accomplishment among all. Special thanks to The Home Depot for their generous donation of lumber and supplies for this project. The day was such a success that plans are in the works for next year… some landscaping improvements or covered storage cage. We hope to see you here next fall. Thank you Carmen Alonzo, Barbara Bakker, Rene Barraza & Marilyn Moran, Rafael & Luzmila Becerra, Lorie Benjamin, Carlos Bojorquez, Marcelo Carrillo, Marysol Cedeno, Carmen El-Khouri, Rosemarie Gonzalez, Angel Guevara, Hermelo Hernandez, Aura Hurtado, Jose & Maria Martinez, Benjamin Nelson, Fidel & Maria Nuñez, Miguel Paniagua, Arcadio Recendez, Lorena Reyes, Mary Richardson, Rita Rioja, Ana Romero, Patrick & Ivonne Silver, Maria Valencia, Miguel Valencia; Christine Araiza, Bre'Anna Bakker, Shannon Benjamin, Karla Bojorquez, Anisa El-Khouri, Hae Yeon Kang, Kierra McClanahan, and Liliana Sandoval. Check out the pictures on the Parent Association blog at http://bclparentblog.blogspot.com.

Thank you, parents, for all that you do in support of your daughter’s education. You are integral to your daughter’s achievement and success at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. Let’s continue to work together to make your daughter’s days at Conaty-Loretto most rewarding for her!

A Message from the Assistant Principal—
Lisa J. Gabriel

It is hard to believe that the school year will soon be coming to a close. I would like to thank all of you that I have had a chance to meet for your warm welcome and support during this, my first year at Bishop Conaty-Loretto. I hope to meet many more of you during the coming school year. Thank you to all of you for your cooperation with school policies and procedures this year.

During the last month of school, I will be visiting Homerooms to distribute notices to students who may need to purchase new pieces of the uniform. If skirts are too short and there is not enough material to lengthen them, please plan to purchase a new skirt for your daughter before the new school year begins. The Dennis Uniform Company can be reached at 818-843-8306 or you can shop online at www.dennisuniform.com. Our school code for online shopping is LA00AB. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

A Message from the President of the Parents’ Board—
Mary Richardson

Our First Annual Mother/Special Friend and Daughter Afternoon Tea will be held on May 3, 2008, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This is a very nice event to get dressed up for and enjoy an afternoon of tea, sandwiches, and cookies with your daughter. This event may also be for a grandmother, godmother or special friend. If you need service hours, and or would like to volunteer please sign up with our Event Coordinator Lorie Benjamin at (323) 547-0316.

The Parent Association is coordinating the Used Book and Used Uniform Sale this June. The sale will take place Friday, June 13, 2008, from 9:00 to 12:00. We need parent volunteers to help with this event. There will be pre-designated areas on the green for grade levels to sell their books, with parents directing traffic and reminding people about fair pricing. The students and families themselves will handle the cash transactions. At the end of May, the booklist for next year with the correct ISBNs, with recommended fair price ranges for each used book, will be distributed to all students. The Parent Association is also selling snacks as a fund-raiser. For this event, Parent Service Hours will be credited for next year. (Next year the Parent Service Hour requirement will increase to 15 hours and $20 per un-served hour). If you would like to get a head start on earning service hours for next year, and would like to volunteer please sign up with our Event Coordinator Lorie Benjamin at (323) 547-0316.

If you have not yet paid your $10.00 Parent Association Dues, please pay them in the Business Office by May 20, 2008. Thank you.

Congratulations to our newly elected Parent Association Executive Officers for next year:
· President: Gwen Jenkins
· Vice President: Carolina Venegas
· Past-President: Mary Richardson
· Secretary: Laverne Simon
· Treasurer: Carmen Alonzo
· Event Coordinator: Arcadio Recendez & Rita Rioja

The last day to receive credit for Parent Service Hours was May 2. Bishop Conaty – Loretto counts on your payments in order to meet our financial obligations in providing an outstanding educational program for your daughters.

Tuition and fee statements were mailed in April to all households indicating the remaining balance due for this school year. It is important that all payments be completed by May 12, 2008. Students with outstanding tuition and fee payments will not be able to take final exams or participate in graduation activities. Please consult the Student – Parent Handbook for details.

Important Financial Dates:
· May 12 - Last day to pay without incurring a late fee
· May 20 - Last day to pay by personal check for 2007-2008 financial obligations
· May 30 – Summer School Registration is due
· June 2 - Senior Exams begin (all fees must be paid prior to this date to be eligible to take exams)
· June 10 – Final Exams begin (all fees must be paid prior to this date to be eligible to take exams)
· June 27 – First half of Summer School payment is due
· July 1 – First tuition payment due for 2008-2009 school year
· July 11 – Second half of Summer School payment is due
· August 1 – 2008-2009 Tuition payment in full to receive 3 % discount

Please contact Ms. Diane Techam in the business office with any questions or concerns about your tuition account.

Development Office

We are still recruiting members for the Development Core Team. If you are interested in helping to guide your daughter’s school into a successful future by pitching in and working on a committee, please contact Judy Krommer, Development Director, at the school number, extension 106 or at jkrommer@bishopconatyloretto.org. Some service hours are applicable to your participation. Be involved: Help to shape and secure the future of Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School.

Academics

Deficiency Reports will be given to students during the week of May 12-16. These notices are given to the students approximately 3 weeks before the end of each quarter of academic work. ONLY those students who are having academic difficulty in a subject receive this notification. No deficiency report is given if your daughter is performing well in her classes, but on occasion a progress report may be given. Please be attentive to these reports and take the necessary action as requested by the teacher. Your intervention now may make the difference between a passing and failing grade for your daughter.

Final Exams begin on June 2 for seniors and on June 10 for all other students. In order for students to be eligible to take final exams, all financial obligations must be satisfied prior to the start of exams. In order to begin final exams all payments must be made by the preceding school day. No make-up exams will be given due to late payments. If financial obligations are not satisfied, the student will not take her exams. Please check your daughter's exam schedule. If your daughter is currently obtaining an "A" grade in a course, she may be exempted from taking that final exam; however, if financial obligations have not been satisfied by the time of the test, the exemption is nullified.

Summer School will be held at Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School from June 23 to July 25. Any student who fails a semester course or a year course must make up the failing grade in an accredited summer school program for high school students during the summer immediately following the failed grade, and have the grades/credits transferred to Conaty-Loretto High School by Monday, August 18, 2008. Any student who fails to meet this obligation will not be permitted to return to Conaty-Loretto on August 28, 2008. If a student takes a course in summer school to make up a course failure, she must pass the course in order to be readmitted to Conaty-Loretto High School. If she participates in a summer school program that involves “completion of contracts”, all contracts must be satisfied and a passing grade received by the above due date. Failure to meet these obligations in the summer due to a course failure(s) will result in the student’s inability to return to Conaty-Loretto High School. You are reminded that if the course your daughter needs to make up is offered in our own Summer School Session, then your daughter must attend our summer school to earn the credit. It is the policy at Conaty-Loretto High School to dismiss any student who fails in three or more year courses at the end of the school year. Ms. Lisa J. Gabriel, Assistant Principal, is the Summer School Principal. More information about summer school can be accessed on the school website: www.bishopconatyloretto.org.

Financial Aid

Information about financial aid awards will be sent out in June. Unfortunately we cannot send out this information earlier because we have to wait to hear about the tuition awards given by the Catholic Education Foundation. Notification is sent to us in early June. Approximately 65% of our families applied for financial aid. In granting financial awards, priority is always given to current students receiving financial aid beginning with seniors, juniors, etc. In addition to the family's financial need, the student’s academic progress is also a consideration in awarding tuition assistance. Financial aid is Bishop Conaty-Loretto's investment in our students; academic achievement and hard work is an expectation for being a recipient of tuition assistance. Every effort is made to award tuition assistance to all qualified families. Please note: financial aid will not be awarded to any student who has not re-registered for the 2008-2009 school year.

Graduation

The Senior Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercise will take place Friday, June 6, 2008, in the school gymnasium. The Baccalaureate Mass begins at 11:15 AM sharp. It will be followed by the Senior Honor Assembly and Baccalaureate Reception. The Commencement Exercise begins at 5:00 PM sharp. No one will be admitted after 5:00 PM. Admission to the Commencement Exercise is by ticket only. For seniors, these formal, dignified celebrations mark the successful completion of their four years of high school studies. Spicer

Dear Wildcat Parents and Guardians:

We are now in the season of Lent. Campus Ministry is coordinating a school-wide Lenten service project. Ask you daughters to tell you about it. The Seniors went on KAIROS Retreat February 11, 2008, through February 14, 2008, and the Sophomores went on retreat February 20, 2008. Please keep the Juniors in your prayers as they go on retreat March 4, 2008. Also keep the faculty and staff in your prayers as they go on retreat Friday, March 14, 2008. School will be closed that day. Many students will be participating in the Religious Education Congress Youth Day, February 28. Four of our students, Yei Seul Hwang, Iris Leonardo, Grace Lim, and Mi Rim Kim, have been selected to be musicians and singers for the Youth Day liturgies, and another student, Eileen Lopez, has been selected to be a master of ceremonies. Finally, Pope Benedict XVI wishes that for every Christian, Lent will be “a renewed experience of God’s love given to us in Christ, a love that each day we, in turn, must ‘re-give’ to our neighbor, especially to the one who suffers most and is need.” During Lent, in order to prepare ourselves for the coming of the risen Lord, many of us “give up” something, like sweets and chocolate. Maybe during this season of Lent, we can give, instead.

The school will be closed for Easter Vacation (and Cesar Chavez Day), March 21, 2008, through March 31, 2008, School will resume Tuesday, April 1, 2008. May you and your families have a blessed Easter.

Thank you for all that you do in support of your daughter’s education. You are integral to your daughter’s achievement and success at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. Let’s continue to work together to make your daughter’s days at Conaty-Loretto most rewarding for her!

A Message from the Assistant Principal—
Lisa J. Gabriel

Attendance: Letters have gone out to the parents of all those students who missed more than 10 days of school during the first semester. According to the Student-Parent Handbook, students who miss more than 10 days of school during a semester will lose academic credit for that semester. There is a process in place to petition to regain those credits which is described in the letter you received. If a student fails to petition for restoration of credit by March 1, she will lose the ability to do so. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Recruitment: Over the past few months, it has been my privilege to visit many of our local Catholic elementary schools to talk to them about what BCLHS has to offer. We have had over 120 students show interest in our school for the 2008-2009 school year. If you know of any 8th graders who are still undecided about their high school plans, please suggest that their parents call the school to get an information packet. Our next entrance exam is on Saturday, May 17 at 8:00 AM.

A Message from the President of the Parents’ Board—
Mary Richardson

Need Service hours? Our Beautification Project will be on March 8th 2008, 8:00 AM to1:00 PM. This year we will have a beautification day at Bishop Conaty -Loretto! This is a great way to earn service hours! We will be building benches to beautify our school. We do however need everyone’s help. We need anyone with carpentry experience and anyone with painting experience and tools. We also would like donations of lumber (2” x 4”). Again this is a great way to help beautify our daughter’s school, and a great way to earn service hours. If you would like to volunteer please sign up with our Event Coordinator Lorie Benjamin at (323) 547-0316, or with Carmen El Khouri (for Spanish-speakers) at (323) 371-1956

Come to our First Annual “Mother/Special Friend and Daughter Afternoon Tea” It will be held on May 3, 2008, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. (Note the new date.) This is a very nice event to get dressed up for and enjoy an afternoon of tea, sandwiches, and cookies with your daughter. This event may also be for a grandmother, godmother or special friend. If you need service hours, and or would like to volunteer please sign up with our Event Coordinator Lorie Benjamin at (323) 547-0316, or with Carmen El Khouri (for Spanish-speakers) at (323) 371-1956.

We need parent volunteers to supervise the Ardmore Gate each morning from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. If you would like to volunteer for this opportunity or for other opportunities, contact Mrs. Lopez in the Office.

We are expanding the ways in which we communicate with you. Check out the Parent Association blog at http://bclparentblog.blogspot.com. Here we will notify you of events and seek your comments on planned and future activities. The Parent Association is your association and your ideas and comments are valued.

Thank you from the Parent Board.

Business Office

Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School prides itself in providing an affordable, quality, Catholic education for all students. Every effort is made to keep expenses at an affordable level. Escalating costs to operate the school necessitate tuition increases. The total TUITION for the 2008-2009 school year will be $5,555 for Catholic students and $5,995 for non-Catholic students. Registration will be $400. Unlike this year, there will only be two mandatory school fund-raisers. We know that our families sacrifice to provide a Catholic education for their daughters, and the school strives to meet the financial needs of our families by offering a tuition assistance program. Make sure you apply for financial aid (see page 3).

Development Office

We are currently engaged in forming a Development Core Team for our school with representation from all “stakeholders” (parents, faculty, alumnae, administration, and volunteers from the private sector). The Development Core Team will assist the Development Department in helping to initiate short and long range planning ideas to secure the future development of Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School, and to create action plans to put those ideas into effect. The Development Core Team will work to enhance Bishop Conaty-Loretto’s efforts to provide quality, affordable education for our students in the Twenty-First Century. We are asking for four (4) parent volunteers for the Team. A one year commitment (2008-2009) to the Core Team is expected with attendance at three meetings required this year: Tuesday, March 11, 2008, 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 3:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 13, 2008, 3:00 p.m. All meetings will be here on campus. If you are interested in volunteering for the Core Team—if you are interested in being a guide for the future of Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School—please get in touch with Ms. Judith Krommer in the Development Office at (323) 737-0012, Ext. 106.

Academics

Deficiency Reports will be given to students during the week of March 3-7.

The Re-registration Process for 2008-2009 has begun. The Course Offerings Booklet and registration information was given to students February 26. This comprehensive booklet lists all the courses available for next year, along with the prerequisites needed to enroll in certain courses. All course offerings selected by students are reviewed both by administration and subject teachers to ensure that the students meet the prerequisites of the course(s). Every effort is made to assist your daughter in making "wise decisions" in selecting courses. It's most important that you're knowledgeable, too, about your daughter's course selections for next year, and you are encouraged to discuss this information with your daughter. (1) Completed 2008-2009 Course Request Forms, (2) the non-refundable $ 400 Registration Fee, and (3) the signed Financial Contract are due March 11. 2008. Remember to place all three re-registration items into an envelope, clearly marked with daughter's name, grade, and amount, and submit it to the Business Office by no later than 3:30 PM, Tuesday, March 11, 2008. It is most important that you re-register on time. Much work is entailed in the registration process. Students who re-register late may not be able to take the courses they have selected for next year, because the class may be closed due to maximum enrollment.

Financial Aid

Many of our families apply for tuition assistance, and the school has worked hard over the years to provide financial aid for our families in order to reduce tuition. The application and information about tuition assistance was given to our students on January 29. Completed forms, including copies of either the 2007 tax forms or 2006 tax form plus 2007 W-2 to verify income, must be returned no later than March 3 for the Catholic Education Foundation’s awards and no later than April 7 for Bishop Conaty-Loretto Financial Aid program awards to be eligible for consideration for financial aid offered by Conaty-Loretto High School in amounts generally ranging from $500-$2,000. The grants received by the Catholic Education Foundation represent approximately one-third of the money that is allocated for tuition assistance. The remaining two-thirds come directly from the school’s financial resources from other foundations, bequests and alumnae. Please make sure that you submit an application on time for financial aid if you meet the qualifications as indicated on the application forms. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered for financial assistance. It is the family's responsibility to ensure that all information requested is submitted and accurate. Students who meet the first application deadline for the Catholic Education Foundation Tuition Assistance Program on March 3 will automatically be considered for all grants awarded by Bishop Conaty-Loretto. Please note: financial aid will not be awarded to any student who has not re-registered for the 2008-2009 school year. Since the Catholic Education Foundation notifies the school in late May/early June about the recipients of their Tuition Awards, we are not able to notify our families about the amount of tuition assistance until June. Every effort is made to award tuition assistance to all qualified families.

Student Activities

Parents are reminded that 10 Service Hours to the school must be fulfilled during the 2007-2008 school year. Remember that for each service hour not earned during the year, a fee of $15 will be assessed at the end of the school year. The last day to earn credit for parent service hours is May 2, 2008.

Friday, April 25, 2008 is Educational Field Trip Day. On this day, all students are sent to various local museums, parks, and historic sites to learn about art, culture, nature, science and history. We are in need of parent chaperones for the field trips. If you are interested in giving of your time, please contact Mrs. Lopez or Ms. Boyle to make arrangements. Parent service hours will be given for your service.

Important Dates
· March 3: Application Deadline for Archdiocesan Tuition Awards for 2008-2009
· March 3 through March 7: Progress Reports Week
· March 4: Junior Class Retreat
· March 7: Junior Ring Ceremony
· March 8: School Beautification Project, 8:00 AM
· March 11: Deadline for 2008-2009 Course Request Forms, Financial Contracts, and Registration Fees
· March 14: Faculty& Staff Retreat, pupil free day
· March 16 through March 22: Holy Week
· March 20: Holy Thursday Prayer Service
· March 21 through March 30: Easter Vacation, school closed
· March 31: Cesar Chavez Day, no school
· April 3 through April 24: Spring Fund-Raiser
· April 5: Class of 2012 Freshman Orientation, 8:00-12:00
· April 7: Application Deadline for Bishop Conaty-Loretto Financial Aid Awards for 2008-2009
· April 10: End of Third Quarter
· April 10: Parents’ Meeting, 6:30, Library
· April 11: Spring Dance, 7:00-10:00
· April 16: Report Card Distribution
· April 18 & April 19: Spring Play, 6:30 PM
· April 22: Senior Class Retreat
· April 22: Senior Parent-Daughter Mass, 6:30 PM
· April 23: Parent Observation Day 2
· April 25: Educational Field Trip Day, All Students
· April 30: Senior Christian Service Hours due

Athletics

Congratulations to our teams! Several parents and their daughters came together to build benches in the courtyard for the students. We hope to you here next fall.

Richard A. Spicer

Estimados Padres y Guardianes Wilcats:

Mary Richardson

¡Actualmente estamos buscando nuevos padres!

Spicer

Dear Wildcat Parents and Guardians:

The end of the first semester is around the corner and the second quarter is half over. Progress reports will go out the week of December 10. If your daughter receives a deficiency report for a class, that means she is struggling in that class. This is where you can help her succeed. It’s not too late for parental intervention. Talk with your daughter and her teacher to determine what steps must be taken to help your daughter improve. Make sure she has all her textbooks. Ask her about her homework. Remind her that “reading” and “studying” as also homework assignments. Encourage your daughter to re-read and re-copy her class notes for the day; if she discovers that she doesn’t understand something in her notes, tell her to ask her teacher about it. Provide her with a good study environment, free from the distractions of her siblings, television, telephone and instant messaging. Help her budget her use of time wisely and balance her chores and studying. Your daughter will be successful in her academic studies if you are there for her every step of the way.

Thank you for all that you do in support of your daughter’s education. You are integral to your daughter’s achievement and success at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. Let’s continue to work together to make your daughter’s days at Conaty-Loretto most rewarding for her!

We at Bishop Conaty-Loretto wish you the happiest of holidays and the merriest of Christmases! May the New Year bring you peace and prosperity and God’s many blessings!

A Message from the Assistant Principal—
Lisa J. Gabriel

This month and throughout the school year, I ask your help with two important discipline issues.

Tardiness to School: Students are receiving more demerits for tardiness to school than for any other infraction of the rules. Please do whatever is necessary to make sure that your daughter gets to school on time. Students who are not in homeroom miss information that they need to know and for which they are held accountable. We appreciate your efforts in this regard.

Dress Code Compliance: Please take a few moments to review the dress code in the Student-Parent Handbook (pages 17-19). Uniform violations account for the second largest number of students in detention every Friday. Please pay particular attention to the length of your daughter’s uniform skirt. Skirts are to be worn no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the knee. I will be checking uniforms in homeroom during the month of December and if your daughter’s skirt is too short, she will be allowed one week to remedy the situation. After that, she will receive a demerit. Also, students who wear the khaki pants may only wear those purchased from the Dennis Uniform Company. “Dickies” brand pants are not allowed. If your daughter does not have the uniform pants with the Dennis label, she must wear her skirt to school. Finally, please check the guidelines for alternative dress. It is important that students come to school appropriately dressed. Skirts that are too short, blouses that are too low-cut or sleeveless are not allowed on alternative dress days. Because students are sometimes not the best judge in these matters, we ask that parents help us by monitoring what their daughter wears to school on alternative dress days.

Thank you for all you do to support your daughter’s education here at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. If there is any way that I can assist you, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I wish you a blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

A Message from the President of the Parents’ Board—
Mary Richardson

We are currently looking for new parents! A strong school is always supported by parents. We are looking for recruitment for the parent board; we need 9th and 10th grade parents to represent our school. Of course all other grades are also welcome. We also need parents that can translate into Korean and Pilipino.

Come to our First Annual “Mother/Special Friend and Daughter Afternoon Tea” It will be held on March 1, 2008, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This is a very nice event to get dressed up for and enjoy an afternoon of tea, sandwiches, and cookies with your daughter. This event may also be for a grandmother, godmother or special friend. If you need service hours, and or would like to volunteer please sign up with our Event Coordinator Lorie Benjamin at (323) 547-0316, or with Carmen El Khouri (for Spanish-speakers) at (323) 371-1956.

We are expanding the ways in which we communicate with you. Here we will notify you of events and seek your comments on planned and future activities. The Parent Association is your association and your ideas and comments are valued.

Thank you from the Parent Board.

Important Dates

· December 10 to December 14▬Progress Reports Week
· December 12▬Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass
· December 14▬Winter Dance
· December 24 to January 4▬Christmas Vacation
· January 7▬School Resumes
· January 10▬Last day to pay by personal check 1st semester payments
· January 17▬Parents’ Meeting, 6:30 PM
· January 21▬Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday
· January 23 to January 25 ▬Final Exams
· January 26▬High School Entrance Test
· January 28▬Grading Day, no school
· January 29 & January 30▬Standardized Testing
· January 31▬Catholic Schools’ Week Mass
· January 31 to February 14▬Valentine Raffle
· February 1▬Christian Service Fair
· February 4▬Report Card Distribution
· February 5▬International Day
· February 6▬Ash Wednesday Mass
· February 11 to February 14▬Senior KAIROS Retreat (Changed Date)
· February 16▬High School Entrance Test
· February 18▬Presidents’ Day Holiday
· February 20▬Sophomore Retreat (Changed Date)
· February 22▬Blood Drive
· February 26▬2008-2009 Registration Assembly
· February 28▬Religious Education Congress Youth Day

Business Office

Tuition and fee statements have been mailed to those households with an outstanding balance. We appreciate your efforts to honor your financial obligations completely and on time. Bishop Conaty – Loretto counts on your payments in order to meet our financial obligations in providing an excellent educational program for your daughters. It is critical that you are up to date on all payments prior to January 15. The last day to pay by personal check for all expenses incurred in the first semester is Thursday, January 10. First semester final exams begin January 23. Students with outstanding tuition and fee payments will not be able to take exams. Please contact Ms. Techam in the business office with any questions or concerns about your tuition account.

Thank you for the great participation in our first two fundraisers of the year. We have celebrated grand prize and other winners in the raffle and top sellers in the Candy Sale. In January we will kick off the Valentine Day Raffle. One lucky winner will receive $5,000! Details of the raffle will be distributed with the tickets after the Christmas and New Year break.

May the gift of peace be yours this Christmas season and in to the New Year.

Guidance Department

Did you meet with your daughter’s teachers after the First Quarter Report Cards? If your daughter received a grade lower than a “C”, perhaps that is something you still need to do before Christmas vacation. Progress Reports will be distributed by teachers the week of December 10. Be sure to speak with your daughter regarding her progress in her classes. If you have any questions, please contact her teachers.

It is not too early to start studying for Semester Final Exams. The exams will be soon after we return from Christmas vacation. Make sure your daughter is ready.

Parents of Seniors: December is the month to gather information so your daughter can apply for financial aid for college during the month of January. All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid, including those planning on attending community college. Please check with your daughter to see if she has applied for a PIN number for her FAFSA (financial aid application). She must also apply for a PIN number for one of her parents. The web site where this can be done is www.pin.ed.gov She will also need to have a copy of your 2006 income tax return for your daughter to use when filling out the FAFSA. Mrs. Marcy is available to help students with their application as long as they have a PIN number and the income tax return.

Parents of Juniors: It is not too early to begin to talk with your daughter about college plans. Together you need to discuss the goals, thoughts, colleges, and wishes that you have for her future academic studies. You may not agree on academic goals, career goals, or college choices, but keep an open mind. This is just the time for research and exploration. If your daughter is undecided, that may just mean that she is open to new ideas and information. It is important to support and encourage your daughter in her plans to attend college. Please remember, this is an individual process. There are many colleges that are terrific, some you know of and others with which you are not yet familiar. Join with your daughter in researching and exploring the many choices available to her. But remember, without good grades and study habits, her choices will be limited. This can be a fun and rewarding experience. Please encourage your daughter to drop by my office to introduce herself and/or to set up a formal appointment so we can begin to develop her college plans.

If there is any way we can help you, please give us a call: Mrs. Marcy: 323 737-0012 Ext 119, and Sister Lupe: 323 737-0012 Ext. 111.

Academics

The end of the first semester is right around the corner and semester final exams will be held by subject areas in January. However, well before these exams, deficiency notices will be given to students who are experiencing academic difficulties and who may be in danger of failing. These notices will be given to students by their teachers during the week of December 10. These notices must be signed by parents and then returned to the teachers issuing them. If your daughter receives a deficiency notice, please review the reasons behind a poor and/or failing grade so that the necessary, immediate corrective action may be taken. Don't forget to sign the bottom section of the deficiency report(s) and have your daughter return it to the subject teacher before the start of the Christmas break.

First Semester Exams are scheduled for January 23 (Modern Language, Fundamentals of English, Religion, Anatomy and Physiology), January 24 (Science, English), and January 25 (Math, Social Studies, Health). Students will be dismissed from school at 12 noon on these exam days, unless scheduled for a third exam, which ends at 2 p.m. Please note that any student currently averaging an "A" in a semester course only may be exempted from taking that exam. Exemptions are at the teachers’ discretion, and not automatic. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with your daughter's testing schedule and make the necessary arrangements to pick up your daughter at the scheduled close of the school day. In order for students to be eligible to take their semester exams, all tuition must be up-to-date and all other financial obligations incurred in the first semester met. The student will receive an "I" (incomplete grade) for the course, which means that she will not receive credit for the course. The "I" will be changed to a grade when payment is received. There will be no make-up exams for those missing regularly scheduled exams because of overdue payments. Failure to take these exams due to outstanding tuition and fees will seriously affect your daughter's grades. Students will not be permitted to resume classes at the start of the second semester, unless they are financially cleared.

First semester report cards will be distributed to the students on Monday, February 4, 2008. These semester grades are recorded on your daughter's permanent school record, i.e., her school transcript. If a student receives an "F" in any semester course (like religion, PE, Health, and Economics), she must attend an accredited six weeks summer school session to make up that failing grade. If the student is a senior, however, she will have to make arrangements to attend evening school during the second semester to make up the failing grade if she intends to graduate with her class in June. Seniors who receive a failing grade at the end of the semester in a year-long course, have one more semester to raise their grade and pass the course. Seniors cannot graduate in June unless they have met all their course requirements. Parents are reminded that it is the policy at Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School to dismiss any student who fails in three or more year courses in June.

Student Activities

Parents are reminded that 10 Service Hours to the school must be fulfilled during the 2007-2008 school year. Remember that for each service hour not earned during the year, a fee of $15 will be assessed at the end of the school year. Some service hour can be earned through donations of sodas and water for the December 14 Winter Dance, thorough donations of food for the International Day Food Faire February 5 or serving at International Day. Contact Ms. Boyle if interest.

Students will celebrate their cultural heritage on International Day, Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Students will wear the folk costumes and perform songs and dances from their cultures. There will be an International Food faire where students will share a taste of their heritage with their peers. Many of your daughters will be asking for your help with folk costumes, ethnic food and cultural entertainment ideas. Don’t miss this opportunity to be involved with your daughter.

Athletics

The varsity volleyball team, under the direction of Marcos Arias, went into playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. The varsity team played a superb season and made it to the semi-finals! The junior varsity, also under the direction of Jan Chambers, had a great season too.

The Wildcats are now beginning their basketball and soccer seasons. Manny Fernandez is the varsity/junior varsity basketball coach, assisted by Robert Lindsay (faculty member). Damian Delaney (faculty member) is the soccer coach. Come and support our Wildcats when their new season begins in January!

Technology

Much of Bishop Conaty-Loretto’ technology systems are funded through e-Rate. E-Rate is the commonly used name for the federal Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund. The information you provide on the annual Family Survey determines how well the school will be funded. Because of your support this year, with 100% of families responding to the survey, Bishop Conaty-Loretto has qualified for 90% funding, the highest rate possible. E-Rate will provide the school with discounts for telephone service, Internet access and basic telecommunication line maintenance. We are also seeking funding for the addition for IPTV to our telecommunications systems. If granted, we plan to provide video feed of school events, courses, and announcements through the worldwide web. We also plan to add a Media Production course to teach the student how to create various forms of broadcasting. Continue to read Parent Newsletter and access the schools’ web site for up-dates.

Thank You

We would like to thank the following parents for their contributions of $10 or more to the Parent Association:
· Benigno & Josie Acosta
· Carmen Alonzo
· Juan Arce & Maria “Lupe” Fernandez
· Concepcion Bolaños
· Sonia Caceres-Velasquez
· Marysol Cedeno
· Beatriz Garcia
· José Luis & Josefina Garcia
· Carlos & Maribel Gonzalez
· Rosemarie Gonzalez
· Jung Sang Kwon & Mi Young Kwon Kim

Gabriel

Spicer

Dear Wildcat Parents and Guardians:

I hope your families have had a good start to the school year. It’s been great to have your daughters return to school. These first two months of school have been full with activity. The first academic quarter is coming to an end, so you know life has been busy at Conaty-Loretto High School. I’m counting on the fact that your daughter has kept you informed of all that has been happening at school. I hope you have been checking our school website http://www.bishopconatyloretto.org/ for news, information, and teachers web pages and links to teacher blogs. If you haven’t had a chance to visit my blog, please check it out at http://bclprincipal.blogspot.com/. I invite your comments. This newsletter is a means to keep you informed of school events and policies. From time to time we will also send home with your daughters important announcements or flyers regarding specific events. Many important dates and events are printed in the Agenda. Always remember to ask your daughters what is happening at school and in their classes.

Back-to-School Night was well attended on September 13, although we did miss many of you. This was an important opportunity for parents to meet with their daughter’s teachers and to learn about the goals and expectations in the various courses. Your presence on that night and at future parent meetings is a very concrete way of letting your daughter know that her education is a priority. Your daughter will be successful in her academic studies if you are there for her every step of the way. Please avail yourself of every opportunity presented by the school to be a strong, supportive, active parent.

Thank you for all that you do in support of your daughter’s education. You are integral to your daughter’s achievement and success at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School. Let’s continue to work together to make your daughter’s days at Conaty-Loretto most rewarding for her!

Be assured of our continued prayers for you and your family.

A Message from the Assistant Principal—
Lisa J. Gabriel

Attendance procedures are delineated in the Student/Parent Handbook, Agenda, pp 8-10. Please read them carefully. Each day students are absent, their parents need to call the school at 323-737-0012 ext. 107 before 9:00 AM to report the absence, and students need to bring a note the day they return to school explaining the reasons for the absence. Additionally, if a student must leave school early due to special circumstances, she needs to bring a note before homeroom; this written note must also include information about her means of transportation if she is not being met at school by a parent. Please note that no student will be permitted to leave early on any day with a scheduled class/school-wide activity for any reason whatsoever. As a parent you have two responsibilities to fulfill when your daughter is absent: (1) Call the office by 9:00 AM to inform the school of your daughter’s absence, and (2) Provide a written note explaining the absence upon your daughter’s return.

Traffic Congestion: Please respect the “rules of the road” on Ardmore Avenue while dropping off or picking up your daughter to and from school to avoid congestion and other unsafe driving practices. The safety of our students is of utmost concern, and it begins with safe driving habits and the rules of etiquette. Also, please do not use the Ardmore Gate entrance driveway to pull in and drop off or pick up your daughter. This driveway is an active driveway and must remain open at all times. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The wearing of the school uniform identifies the student as a member of Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto School. Every student is an “ambassador” both in and outside of the school, and the larger community comes to know our school through our students. Too many students change the appearance of their uniform both when arriving and leaving school and this sends a different message to the community than the one we wish to convey. Every student should wear her uniform with pride, and she should always strive to “look her best”. Skirts must be no more than three inches above the top of the knee. Socks must be white knee socks, white knee-highs or folded white crew socks. Please refer to the section on the school uniform in Student/Parent Handbook, Agenda, pp 17-20 for details.

A Message from the President of the Parents’ Board—
Mary Richardson

First, we want to welcome Mr. Spicer on his first year as Principal! We also want to welcome our new parents to our community at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School! We have a busy and exciting year planned! With work and everyday life, we understand that it can be difficult to get involved in your daughter’s school, so we have set in advance dates for future memorable events, and a “Beautification Project”, that you can get involved with and earn service hours.

We welcome new parent board members, especially parents that can translate in Spanish and Korean. We also need parents with daughters in the 9th and 10th grade to join the parent board.

Calendar of Events

Parent Board Meetings: Oct. 23, 2007, Jan. 15, 2008, Feb.19, 2008, March 18, 2008, April 15, 2008, and May 20, 2008; at 6pm, at the School. Service Hour opportunity to all parents.

We may be adding more events in the future.

Thank you from the Parent Board.

Campus Ministry

What is Service-Learning?

The roots of service are in the Hebrew Scriptures when the prophets announced God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. It is also found in the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to blind.” (Lk 4:18-19). As a requirement for graduation each student is to complete a minimum of 25 hours per year for each year she attends Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School.

The Service-Learning Program combines service objectives with learning objectives to foster solidarity with the poor that will lead to intellectual inquiry, moral reflection and social action. Each student at Bishop Conaty-Loretto is asked to connect her service experiences to her learning through a process of self-reflection and self-discovery in which she articulates the values, skills and knowledge she understands she has acquired through her service.

The guidelines for fulfilling her Service-Learning Experience are 1: to seek out service opportunities that focus on the essential elements of Catholic Social Teaching (at least one-fourth of each year’s hours are to be specifically given in service to the underprivileged); 2: complete a pre-service approval process with the Campus Minister; 3: prepare the proper forms and evaluations for each service organization; 4: At the end of the second semester, the student (except Seniors) completes a reflection paper that is kept in her Service-Learning Portfolio (Seniors prepare a presentation of all of their service experiences to be presented at the end of January).

Business Office

The Winter Fund-Raiser begins on November 6 and ends on November 20. Each family is responsible to sell at least $150 worth of World Finest’s candy. Our fund-raisers enable us to keep our tuition and fees at a reasonable cost, but it does require a little work on your part in support of the fund-raisers. Please note that there are two more fund-raisers that will be held during the second semester. A copy of the list of winners for the raffle that will take place at St. Agnes School on October 29 will be given to students in homeroom, the week after the event.

Guidance Department

Outreach Concern, Inc., a psychological counseling service that is utilized by our school, introduces a topic a month as part of their “Family Life” program. You can access their monthly newsletters at the following website: http://www.outreachconcern.org/. You can also access this website through a link on the school’s website: http://www.bishopconatyloretto.org/. On the home page, click on Guidance, and scroll to the end of the page where information is contained for Outreach Concern. A link is provided at the end of that section.

Useful Websites

Fall is the time for senior to apply for college, but is never too early or juniors, sophomores andfreshmen to start planning for college.·

Colleges and UniversitiesCalifornia State University http://www.csumentor.edu/

University of California www.ucop.edu/pathways

Nationwide http://www.catholiccollegesonline.org/

Testing Agencies/College Info http://www.act.org/http://www.collegeboard.com/

Scholarships http://www.fastweb.com/

Financial Aid http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Academics

Deficiency Reports were given to students during the week of 8-11.

Report Cards will be given to the students on November 9. Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled during the week of November 13-16.

Our annual fall Parent Classroom Observation Day is planned for November 28. This is a day when parents are invited to attend classes with their daughters. Many of our parents look forward to this annual event, and we hope that many of you will avail yourself of this opportunity to become "a student for the day." You may choose to come for part of the day or for the entire day. It's a great way to experience what your daughter is doing on a daily basis and to learn first hand what's happening in the classroom. You also have an opportunity to meet other parents that is a great bonus! Please try to set aside some time to participate. More information will be sent home as the day approaches.

Student Activities

Parents are reminded that 10 Service Hours to the school must be fulfilled during the 2007-2008 school year. Remember that for each service hour not earned during the year, a fee of $15 will be assessed at the end of the school year. Any money owed due to unserved hours must be paid prior to your daughter taking final exams in June 2008. Be attentive to service hour opportunities that are periodically announced throughout the school year.

Spirit Day will take place November 2. This is a time of friendly competition among teams comprised of different grade levels. Various activities are planned. Ask your daughter about the particulars of this very spirited occasion. It’s an opportunity for our students to show their unity and pride in their school.

Athletics

The volleyball season is well underway, and our teams are having a great season! If you have an opportunity, come and see our teams in action. The Wildcats would love a parent cheering section. Special thanks to our coaches Mr. Arias (V) and Ms. Chambers (JV).

Bishop Conaty-Loretto introduced the sport of cross-country this year. The team has already placed well at some meets. Congratulations to our coach Ms. Boyle and her assistant coaches Ms. Lizarraga, Mr. Park and Mr. Delaney.

Visual and Performing Arts

Drama Club will present Salem’s Daughter this fall. Check out Ms. Corso’s webpage for details: http://www.atheneproductions.com/ .

Technology

As you are aware, this year we are integrating new technologies into all aspects of our educational program. Students are learning how to use the Internet responsibly and ethically. Our teachers blogs are examples of the proper use of blogging.
